HELPALONGYOURWAY (HAYW):

The Headless Serpent

What is the concept or lyrical content of this track?

ABYSSAL:

This track confronts the perception that ideologies and philosophies are top-down units which act like a single organism. In reality they are often a continuum, hence ‘headless’ – this reveals many convolutions when attempting to kill or create belief systems and cultures.

HAYW:

Created Sick; Commanded to be Well

How did this track make it into the mix at over 10 minutes?

ABYSSAL:

The track is inspired by the funeral doom style of metal music which frequently has longer songs. The track is not a great deal longer than some of the others on the release which approach 9 minutes.

HAYW:

Live?

Does the band play live?

If so, will you make it to Texas?

ABYSSAL:

The band plays a handful of small live shows. There is currently no financial or logistical way that a band of our size could make it to the USA.

HAYW:

Tools of the Trade:

What kind of guitar rig was used to record Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius?

Is there a bass guitar in the mix anywhere?

ABYSSAL:

The guitar sound on the album is created by running a custom Daemoness guitar through a variety of boutique amplifiers. There is of course a bass guitar on the recording and it is clearly audible in many locations, 4 minutes into As Paupers Safeguard Magnates for example.

HAYW:

Have Abyssal Considered?:

-using choir vocals in any tracks as atmosphere?

-incorporating cellos for vibrant heavy effect?

-industrial tools for noise effects?

-recording at Mana Studios (Erik Rutan)?

ABYSSAL:

The band is not against using any of the above effects within songs, so long as they are not used in a manner which is gimmicky or overpowering to the bulk of composition.

As for recording at Mana Studios, we are not a band on a gigantic budget. Paying tens of thousands of dollars to record with Rutan, as well as the thousands of dollars to fly us (plus equipment) to Florida and back is not something that is feasible.

HAYW:

Inside the Minds:

What are you thoughts on life - is there just one or is there also an eternal one?

ABYSSAL:

Each human has one life from birth until death. There is no spirit beyond the deeds and memories of an individual.

HAYW:

What is the meaning of your life?

ABYSSAL:

Whatever meaning I choose to ascribe to it; to grow, to learn, to accomplish etc.

HAYW:

Why do you exist?

ABYSSAL:

No human has any necessary extrinsic reason to exist.

HAYW:

Are you descended from animals or just happenstance?

ABYSSAL:

All humans are descended from animals.

HAYW:

Is there real evil in the world?

ABYSSAL:

There is no such thing as evil, merely what a culture or society labels as evil. What has been considered evil over time has radically changed.

HAYW:

if so, how would you define evil?

ABYSSAL:

What is perceived as evil is often simply a mental condition or a set of antithetical behaviours that are rewarded by external factors.

HAYW:

Do you think there are invisible forces at work in the world?

-if so - why? if not, why not?

ABYSSAL:

This depends on what you mean by invisible forces. There are almost certainly no supernatural forces of any form, as every single proposition has failed to hold any evidential reality. The only invisible forces per se are the laws that govern the physical world.

HAYW:

Does altruism mean anything to you?

ABYSSAL:

Altruism exists because it was evolutionarily useful. It remains useful today, and holds an important part in a great deal of human folklore. It does not ‘mean’ anything in particular to me.

HAYW:

We know the metal world is filled with criticism of religions of any kind, if there existed a religion that practiced caring for the widows and orphans - would you personally support that religion?

ABYSSAL:

If said religion did not use untrue supernatural claims to support its doctrine, then yes. However it would then arguably cease to be a religion, as this word is entangled with metaphysics and the supernatural. There are life philosophies such as humanism which address this kind of topic, but they are not religions.

HAYW:

Do you think the world is on the verge of financial collapse and instituting a One World government?

ABYSSAL:

Global financial collapse – almost certainly. One world government – I am not convinced. The world is too chaotic to arrange itself into such a complex overarching system. Many of the conspiracies that are attributed to this idea are the conglomeration of separate conspirators who are often fighting against each other for geopolitical, or otherwise trivial and childish aims.
