Theocracy

As The World Bleeds

Ulterium Records

Origin - USA

Now how many composer, much less bands record an 11 minute opener to their new full length?  Only one - Theocracy.  With over an hour of power metal genius, you'll be dissatisfied this release is not longer.

Vocally Matt Smith's delivery is impecable, refreshing and the clearest amongst the greats like Geoff Tate, Bob Rock, Christian Liljegren, Timo Kotipelto, Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry.  No joke.  Val's and Jonathan's guitars are striking, powerful, European raised with pin point accuracy, well-dosed and well phrased.  Not only is the guitar sound electric, but also acoustic parts can be found (for the soft rock fan in all of us).  Jared's bass work is audibly-steady, ringing with heavy bottom end runs alongside the guitars... we have in mind John Myung.  Shaw's drum styling is classic in terms of continual quality and spread out sounds from various channels, every hear of Vinnie Appice, Lars Ulrich, Deen Castronovo.

Lyrically this band has the guts to address topics that even the most controversial bands fail to scratch the surface. How does a metal band sing about the one true God Most High, Jesus, every man's struggle, and beauty of music?  That is for you to figure out as you hear As The World Bleeds.

If you fancy Ensiferum, Stratovarius, Turisas, Falconer - then you might as well click here to buy.

ICS Vortex

Storm Seeker

Century Media Records

Origin - Norway

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

ICS Vortex, the bassist and former clean Vocalist of Dimmu Borgir delivers a heavy dose of classic metal sense and spice.  Just imagine most of this album was written and performed by one person.  In no way does it sound like one person recorded the majority of it, minus drums handled by Asgeir Mickelson plus Cyrus and Arne helping.  Every song carries with it validity and purpose.  There are instances of hard rock, instances of metal, instances of alternative vibes... all this to say, never an awkward moment.  Buy your own, click here.

White Arms of Athena

Astrodrama

Prosthetic Records

Origin - Texas

Is is really fair to say that White Arms Of Athena may have conquered the grasshoppa complex and surpassed the masters at this type of progressive metal?  Have they surpassed Between The Buried And Me?  The question is presents the preponderance of nuances and influence.  Who influenced who?  Obviously BTBAM influenced White Arms of Athena. A recommendation for purchase, Click Here to buy.

Design The Skyline

Nevaeh

Victory Records

Origin - Texas

A highly volatile and captivating debut for victory Records.  Half a dozen musicians raised on the salty breeze of the Gulf Coast can only mean one thing - intense music the size of Texas.  From the garden that grew Ankgor Wat and Devastation, 90s thrash bands - it would only be a matter of time for Corpus to hit hard again.  It would take just the right elements in the right proportions to envelope into Design The Skyline.  One part Zao, one part Norma Jean, one part Hawthorne Heights, one part Death Angel, one part Rammstein, one part Tool.  Order yours now, click here.

Cephalic Carnage

Misled By Certainty

Relapse Records

Origin - USA

Cephalica Carnage are never to be underestimated, nor outthought.  With this new Misled By Certainty release, you have nearly every track encapsulated ready for audible digestion.  Mind you it will be a bumpy ride to the pit of the stomach but definitely worth the trip. Cephalic Carnage is unlike any band in extreme metal, they are a forerunner only emulated and attempted mimics by other bands.  This brand of extreme cannot be forecast - heaviness in all stretches of the imagination.

Sanitarium inducing fits of speed to the point of fretting Super Mario Bros.tm inflections on the fretboards.

Jesse Pintado would be proud to have heard this! Guitars, Bass, Drums, Vocals - all spot on and never better done by this band.  Hands down their best release to date. Click to buy.

Isole

Born From Shadows

Napalm Records

Origin - Sweden

Isole screams genius elements of Crimson Glory, Solitude Aeturnus, Candlemass, Katatonia, Moonsorrow, Barren Earth, Black Sabbath.

Other than ISOLE, Black Sabbath is the only other four-piece band that amass so much sound from just four people.  For a majority of the album, the vocals are clean singing and easy on the ears.  Periodically you hear the gutteral grunts of pain from the dungeon but for the most part you will be lured into solitude by the scandinavian style english vocals.  For you drummers out there - lessons can be learned for drum fill timing, bass kicks, and finesse on the cymbals.  Finely tuned control.  Should you lean on the guitar side of your musical fancy, both guitarists double the doom sound even as one sings!  Solos are enduring in nature and tend to create grooves in the gray matter which continue playback long after the music stops.  One problem ISOLE avoid is an overpowering thick bass that muddies up the sound.  Throughout the entirety of Born From Shadows the bass guitar is well balanced and identifiable as contributing to the overall quality fo the sound. My personal favorite track, Condemned - you just have to hear it for yourself.  All it takes is once to get nabbed.

Other than Candlemass, we lay claim to the fact that ISOLE is top tier doom metal in its finest hour of 55 minutes.  Click now to buy.

Wolves Like Us

Late Love

Prosthetic Records

Origin - Norway

You need Adobe Flash Player to view this content.

Wolves Like Us hereafter referred to as WLU brings about a heavy rock style in the vein of old Blindside, current colleagues Kveterlak, and adored Soundgarden (Ultra Mega era).  The dissonance points to the genius of black flack and Henri Rollins Band.  The bass guitar has a boxy-sound which works well in this sound environment called Late Love, by no means is this a dis - but just a descriptor.  Thank goodness the drums don't sound like the pre-canned kits that plague metal and hard rock today.  Nice back breaking drum tones and guitars that sound The Beatsteaks and The Spirit That Guides Us.  One fine heavy disc.  Click to pick!
